Kristen Stewart Investigates a Transhumanist Group in "Crimes of the Future" Trailer

Since crushing her role as Princess Diana of Wales in "Spencer," Kristen Stewart has been busy planning her wedding, reuniting with former "Twilight" costars, and apparently conducting scientific experiments on synthetically mutated bodies in a distant, disturbing future. Swapping evening gloves and pearls for scrubs and some kind of medical instrument, Stewart stars alongside Viggo Mortensen and Léa Seydoux in the creeptastic trailer for David Cronenberg's new sci-fi horror film, "Crimes of the Future."

"It is time to stop seeing. It is time to stop speaking. It is time to listen," a monotone voice repeats during the trailer as a woman watches a set of reptilian robot arms alter the body of a man in an alien-like pod. Flashing between eerie medical instruments and a glowing mass of flesh that looks like something from the Upside Down in "Stranger Things," the video eventually lands on a clip of a man with multiple ears attached to his head having his eyes and mouth sewn shut with black thread — nightmare fuel. Before the trailer comes to a close, Stewart can be seen peering through a tube as she ruthlessly presses the opposite end into an open wound in someone's abdomen.

Another terrifying trailer dropped on May 6, containing plenty more pain, convulsions, and gore. In this trailer, Stewart is seen whispering in the ear of an eerie hooded man (Mortensen), who is later shown enmeshed in a bizarre skeletal contraption. Things only grow stranger from there, with shots of deep wounds being opened and gory surgeries at the hands of robots creating a montage of futuristic body horror as only Cronenberg can portray it.

In her first onscreen project since "Spencer," Stewart stars as an impassioned investigator working with the National Organ Registry in a distant human reality where body modification is taken to the extreme. The synopsis reads, "As the human species adapts to a synthetic environment, the body undergoes new transformations and mutations. With his partner Caprice (Léa Seydoux), Saul Tenser (Viggo Mortensen), celebrity performance artist, publicly showcases the metamorphosis of his organs in avant-garde performances. Timlin (Kristen Stewart), an investigator from the National Organ Registry, obsessively tracks their movements, which is when a mysterious group is revealed . . . Their mission — to use Saul's notoriety to shed light on the next phase of human evolution."

Filming for "Crimes of the Future" took place in Athens, Greece, from August to September 2021. The movie, presented by Neon ("Spencer," "I, Tonya," "Parasite," "The Worst Person in the World"), is not to be confused with "Crimes of the Future," Cronenberg's unrelated 1970 sci-fi film.

"Crimes of the Future" will star Viggo Mortensen as Saul Tenser, "No Time to Die's" Léa Seydoux as Caprice, Kristen Stewart as Timlin, "Underworld"'s Scott Speedman as Lang Daughtery, Welket Bungué, Don McKellar, Lihi Kornowski, "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 1"'s Tanaya Beatty, Yorgos Karamihos as Brent Boss, Yorgos Pirpassopoulos, Nadia Litz as Dani Router, Denise Capezza, Ephie Kantza as Adrienne Berseau, and Jason Bitter as Tarr.

"Crimes of the Future" is set to debut at the Cannes Film Festival from May 17 to May 28 and will be in competition for the Palme d'Or, the most prestigious award distributed at the festival. The film is expected to make its theatrical debut in June.
