Zendaya Wants to Leave East Highland High School in "Euphoria" Season 3

Aug 15 2022 - 11:20am

"Euphoria [1]" season two came to an end on Feb. 27, and the long wait for season three has been torture. The popular HBO teen drama was renewed for season three [2] on Feb. 4, following a record-breaking season that raked in a massive viewership of 2.4 million with its premiere (a milestone premiere for HBO Max [3]).

The season's finale leaves fans with so many questions about what the future holds for our favorite East Highland teens [4]: Will Rue stay sober past her junior year of high school? Are she and Jules really over? Is the Maddy-Nate-Cassie love triangle [5] really done? Is Fez going to jail after the police raid on his house? Will he ever get to be with Lexi, or will the emotional fallout from his little brother, Ashtray's, death [6] consume Fez's storyline next season? And then there's that whole missing-suitcase-full-drugs loose end [7] that never got tied up. Let's just say season three is bound to be a wild ride.

In the months since the season two finale, stars from the show have opened up about what they hope to see happen to their characters moving forward into season three and onward, from Zendaya [8] to Chloe Cherry and Maude Apatow. Read on to learn everything we know about "Euphoria [9]" season three so far, including its expected premiere date, plot details, and more.

What Will "Euphoria" Season 3 Be About?

While most plot details about "Euphoria [10]" season three are still under wraps, the actors who portray these complex characters have given insight into where they want their onscreen personas to go next.

In an Aug. 13 interview with The Hollywood Reporter [11], Zendaya [12] revealed she's most excited to explore the characters' lives outside of high school. "I want to see what Rue looks like in her sobriety journey, how chaotic that might look," she said. It'll definitely be interesting to see Rue's sobriety journey (and how Jules may or may not fit into it after what went down in season two [13]). Zendaya [14] continued, "But also with all the characters, in the sense where they're trying to figure out what to do with their lives when high school is over and what kind of people they want to be. What was special about this season was that we got to dive into [the other characters] in a much deeper sense. I think we can do that again with the third season. There's so much talent, you want to make sure everybody has the chance to have that."

Apatow [15], who plays Lexi [16] on the series, opened up to Entertainment Weekly [17] in February about her hopes for the slow-burn romance brewing between Fez, played by Angus Cloud, and Lexi [18] (aka Fexi [19]). When asked about what season three holds for Fexi, she said she'd love to explore more of her relationship with Fez — if he's still a part of season three, that is. "I love working with Angus. I think Angus is such a great actor, and we just have so much fun working together," she said. "So, for selfish reasons, I hope we get to do more scenes together because it's fun."

Similarly, Cherry, who plays Faye [20], hopes to return in season three and expressed a desire for her character to grow closer to Rue in future seasons. "I think Faye has a story of addiction to tell as Rue does; even though it's different," Cherry told Variety [21]. "I think that they could learn something from each other. I also think Rue is a non-judgmental character, and I think that is all Faye needs. I think if they got closer, they would get along because they have these shared experiences, and they are both chill girls in spite of it." Seeing how fun their scenes together in the season two premiere are, we'd love to see Rue and Faye bonding in season three.

As for Nate, Maddy, and Cassie, it's safe to assume they'll continue to deal with the fallout of their love triangle (if you can even call it that), while Fez will have to work through the legal aftermath of the shoot-out at his house, as well as the emotional trauma of losing his little brother, Ash. Which Cast Members Are Returning For "Euphoria" Season 3?

It goes without saying that Zendaya [23] (Rue) will be back for "Euphoria" season three. Beyond that, Dominic Fike [24] (Elliot) and Eric Dane [25] (Cal) have both confirmed [26] they'll be returning for the new season [27].

Barring any surprises, the rest of the main cast members of the series will probably return for season three, which include Hunter Schafer [28] (Jules), Nika King [29] (Leslie), Alexa Demie [30] (Maddy), Barbie Ferreira [31] (Kat), Apatow (Lexi), Sydney Sweeney (Cassie) [32], Jacob Elordi [33] (Nate), Storm Reid [34] (Gia), Colman Domingo (Ali) [35], and Austin Abrams (Ethan) [36].

It's unclear if we'll see Cloud [37] and Cherry return, considering Fez is arrested at the end of the finale after a shoot-out with the police and is the only connection Faye had to the show. Javon Walton probably won't return following Ashtray's apparent death amid the shoot-out [38] (barring any surprise twist that sees his life saved, of course).

Season two additions Minka Kelly [39] (Samantha) and Martha Kelly (Laurie) [40] might also return for another round. Any details on new faces joining season three of "Euphoria" are still forthcoming.

How Many Episodes Will "Euphoria" Season 3 Have?

Both season one and season two of "Euphoria [41]" had eight episodes, with the first season getting two additional hour-long special episodes [42] focusing on Rue [43] and Jules [44] to hold fans over amid COVID-related filming delays.

Season three of "Euphoria [45]" will likely consist of eight episodes as well, each clocking in at about an hour.

When Will "Euphoria" Season 3 Come Out?

Fans might have to wait quite a while to devour "Euphoria" season three [46], as Zendaya [47]'s schedule is jam-packed for the rest of the year.

The former Disney Channel star has her hands full as she'll be shooting the highly anticipated sequel to Denis Villeneuve's "Dune," [48] as well as the recently announced romantic drama "Challengers." [49]

It's unclear whether we'll be treated to special episodes in the interim as we did with the two-and-a-half-year hiatus between seasons one and two, but chances are season three of Euphoria [50] won't hit HBO until 2024.
