ENCHANTED FOREST -- In Walt Disney Animation Studios'
To no one's surprise, Frozen 2 [1] has iced out box office competition, breaking several major records since its Nov. 22 release — and the streak has continued into 2020. As of Jan. 5, the film has become the highest-grossing animated movie in history [2], generating $1.3 billion globally to beat out 2013's Frozen, 2018's Incredibles 2, and last year's reboot of The Lion King [3].

Over the five-day Thanksgiving break last year, which spanned from Nov. 27 to Dec. 1, the Disney sequel also collected $123.7 million [4], making it the highest-grossing film ever during the holiday stretch. The record was previously held by The Hunger Games: Catching Fire [5], which brought in $109 million in 2013. Think that's impressive? Well, there's more.

Within its opening weekend, Frozen 2 raked in $130 million in North America, crowning itself the most lucrative animated movie ever released in November. Even more impressive, the adventure flick [7] now stands as having the biggest opening weekend for Walt Disney Animation films [8], not including Pixar. It also had the best global opening for an animated film ever [9], making $358.2 million worldwide. Currently, in the first week of the new year, the movie's total domestic profit stands around $449.9 million, and its international gains are around $875.3 million, according to Box Office Mojo [10]. Now that's a cold front.

The past year has been majorly successful for Disney films. In July, the company celebrated Avengers: Endgame surpassing Avatar as the No. 1 movie of all time [11] after it crossed the $2.7892 billion mark. The following month, the Lion King reboot joined the "all-time" team by becoming the highest-grossing animated film ever [12], conquering the first Frozen movie. But, of course, Elsa and Anna have now reclaimed that throne from King Simba.
