Daniel Kaluuya Leads a Revolution in New Trailer For Judas and the Black Messiah

"You can murder a revolutionary, but you can't murder a revolution."

With those words, Daniel Kaluuya and LaKeith Stanfield are coming for their Oscars. On Jan. 13, Warner Bros. dropped the second trailer for Judas and the Black Messiah, the highly anticipated film inspired by the real-life betrayal and assassination of Black Panther Party Chairman Fred Hampton, which stars Academy Award nominee Kaluuya alongside the The Photograph's Stanfield. From the trailer alone, we're hooked.

British-Ugandan Kaluuya stars as Fred Hampton, the young, charismatic activist who serves as chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party in 1968. His work to inspire a generation to rise up and not back down to oppression, fight for freedom, determine the destiny of the Black community, and put an end to police brutality and the slaughter of Black people put him directly in the line of fire of the Chicago Police, the FBI, and the government. The FBI offers a deal to William O'Neal (Stanfield), a Black man facing over five years in prison: infiltrate the Black Panthers to provide intel on Hampton and he'll walk free. O'Neal takes the deal and rises in ranks of the Party, battling his growing devotion to the cause and his fear.

Shaka King's feature-film directorial debut also stars Jesse Plemons, Dominique Fishback, Ashton Sanders, Algee Smith, and Martin Sheen, with Marvel's Black Panther director Ryan Coogler serving as producer. The movie — which takes dramatic liberties with Hampton and O'Neal's stories and doesn't serve as a straight biopic — was originally slated for release on Aug. 21 but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will now drop in theaters on Feb. 12, the same day it begins a 31-day streaming period on HBO Max.
