Dakota Johnson, Henry Golding, and Cosmo Jarvis Lead Netflix's "Persuasion"

Netflix's film adaptation of "Persuasion," starring Dakota Johnson, is gearing up for its summer release. In the film, Johnson's Anne Elliot — a woman torn between family and love — is joined by Cosmo Jarvis, who stars as the dashing Captain Frederick Wentworth, and Henry Golding, the secretive Mr. Elliot.

Inspired by Jane Austen's final novel, which published six months after her death in 1817, the Netflix film's story follows 27-year-old Anne as she deals with the reality of her family's bankruptcy. As if Anne's life couldn't get any more confusing, her former fiancé, Frederick, reenters her life, and she can't let go of her feelings for him. In the end, she must decide whether it's better to put the past behind her or rethink giving Frederick a second chance.

This adaptation of "Persuasion" — written by Ron Bass and Alice Victoria Winslow and directed by Carrie Cracknell, who's making her debut — is set to be a sweeping romantic period drama when the film hits Netflix in July. We know Johnson, Jarvis, and Golding's characters, but read on to learn more about the rest of the movie's cast and what roles they're playing.

Henry Golding as William Elliot

Golding stars, not as the primary love interest, but as Mr. William Elliot, a distant relation of Anne Elliot and her father's heir. Both cold and calculating, William becomes estranged from his family after it's revealed he married for money. In the novel, his return is welcomed when the family are in desperate need for money. It's also this return that sees his romantic pursuit of Anne.

After roles as the charming Nick Young in "Crazy Rich Asians" and the too-good-to-be-true Tom Webster in "Last Christmas," it'll be interesting to see Golding play the "bad guy."

Dakota Johnson as Anne Elliot

To say we're excited to see Johnson take on a modern Anne Elliot is an understatement. Despite still loving her fiancé, Frederick Wentworth, Anne is convinced at the age of 19 to break off the engagement. Eight years later, unmarried and facing bankruptcy, she reconnects with the love she thought she'd once lost. Now independent and confident in what she wants, Anne feels her future is up to her, not her family.

Best known for her role as Anastasia Steele in the Fifty Shades of Grey series, Johnson is no stranger to the romantic drama. We can't wait to see what she does in the role and with Cosmo Jarvis as the mysterious Captain Wentworth.

Cosmo Jarvis as Captain Frederick Wentworth

"Persuasion" features Jarvis as the brooding Captain Frederick Wentworth. The original novel sees him with no fortune and a lack of prospects when he initially proposes to Anne. He returns years later as an eligible bachelor thanks to his achievements in the Napoleonic Wars. Jarvis is best known for his music career and role as Sebastian in 2016's "Lady Macbeth."

Richard E. Grant as Sir Walter Elliot

Grant's "Persuasion" role is starring as Anne's father, Sir Walter Elliot. A man known for his selfishness and vanity, it's Sir Walter's spending and expensive tastes that put his family into financial difficulties. This wouldn't be a stretch for Grant, who has played similar characters with Clifford in 1997's "Spice World," George in 2001's "Gosford Park," Lord Barkis Bittern in 2005's "Corpse Bride," and Allegiant General Enric Pryde in 2019's "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker."

Nikki Amuka-Bird as Lady Russell

Amuka-Bird plays the role of Anne's godmother, Lady Russell, who persuaded Anne not to marry Captain Wentworth. With roles like Rav Mulcair on "Avenue 5," Marsha on "Gold Digger," Mrs. Steerforth in "The Personal History of David Copperfield," and Diomika Tsing in "Jupiter Ascending," the BAFTA nominee will do a great job as this character.

"Persuasion" is basically getting the royal treatment with Hoyle, who played Catherine Parr in the musical "Six" and Mary Seton in "Mary Queen of Scots." The actor plays Henrietta Musgrove, Mary's sister-in-law who is tempted to pursue Captain Wentworth.

Smith, who also goes by the stage name Doc Brown, is an English rapper, comedian, and actor who can most recently be seen as Richie Hansen on "The Split." Although we still don't know what role he'll be playing, his comedic roots suggest he might play Charles Musgrove, Mary's cheerful husband, or Admiral Croft, Captain Wentworth's good-natured brother-in-law.
