5 Haunted Houses We Hope to See on Future Seasons of the Haunting Series

The success of both The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor is a testament to just how much people love being scared by a haunted house. Although there's been no word from Netflix yet about whether there'll be a third season of Mike Flanagan's The Haunting series, we're definitely ready for more. We're not ready to say goodbye to Carla Gugino, Victoria Pedretti, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Kate Siegel, and Henry Thomas in relation to Flanagan's eerie world. Of course, we already have a few ideas up our sleeves — including another Shirley Jackson novel just waiting for its time to shine. Ahead are five books and stories we hope the Haunting series will think about adapting for season three and beyond.

We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson

We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson

The Haunting of Hill House is an adaptation of Shirley Jackson's novel of the same name, but it isn't her only eerie offering. Unlike Hill House, there's nothing supernatural about We Have Always Lived in the Castle, which is about two sisters who have become outcasts in their town due to a previous incident at their home that left half of their family poisoned to death. The book is rife with all the family drama one can expect from a season of the Haunting series. It also includes nods to an everyday evil as well as the stereotypical closed-mindedness of those in a small town. All we know is that Kate Siegel and Victoria Pedretti would make an excellent Constance and Mary Katherine "Merricat" Blackwood.

02
The Woman in Black by Susan Hill

The Woman in Black by Susan Hill

The script basically writes itself with The Woman in Black. I mean, The Haunting of Eel Marsh House, anyone? In Susan Hill's 1983 novel, junior solicitor Arthur Kipps is tasked with settling the estate of Mrs. Alice Drablow. Upon arrival, Arthur learns of the Woman in Black, a ghost that haunts the town and causes the death of a child every time she is seen. Yes, there have already been plenty of adaptations — including the 2012 film of the same name starring Daniel Radcliffe — but it's time for an update. Mike Flanagan essentially made The Turn of the Screw his own with Bly Manor, and we know he'd do an amazing job with The Woman in Black. If Oliver Jackson-Cohen isn't available for Arthur, maybe Michiel Huisman or Rahul Kohli could be up for the job?

03
The House of the Seven Gables by Nathaniel Hawthorne
Amazon

The House of the Seven Gables by Nathaniel Hawthorne

Nathaniel Hawthorne may be best known for The Scarlet Letter, but The House of the Seven Gables would make for a much more compelling season three of the Haunting series. It really has it all: romance, a supposed murder, family drama, accusations of witchcraft, and a secret heir. The plot involves a curse that Matthew Maule places on Colonel Pyncheon for stealing his land, a curse that threatens to affect the colonel's descendants. Time passes and the house goes to the destitute Hepzibah Pyncheon, who looks after her brother who has just completed a 30-year prison sentence for murder. It's up to Hepzibah and her cousin Phoebe to try to rid the family of the curse. Plus, Seven Gables has a rather large ensemble of characters, so favorites like Henry Thomas and Carla Gugino could find a way to make an appearance.

04
The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe
Amazon

The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe

Granted, any number of Edgar Allan Poe's works could be adapted for the series and I'd be happy, but The Fall of the House of Usher has the closest vibe to both Hill House and Bly Manor. The story follows an unnamed narrator who receives a letter from his friend Roderick Usher asking for his help. He goes to Roderick's family home, where it's revealed that Roderick's twin sister, Madeline, is deathly ill. Things begin to unravel at the house, with Roderick burying his sister in the family tomb, despite the fact she may still be alive. Since this is actually a short story, it might be good for Flanagan to take inspiration from some of Poe's other works, like he did with Henry James during Bly Manor.

The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Gilman

The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Gilman

What's good about short stories like The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Gilman is that there's only so much source material the Haunting series creators can take inspiration from. A previous film adaptation went the route of an origin story of The Yellow Wallpaper, which might be a good way to adapt it for season three. The story is about a couple who rent out an old mansion for the summer so the wife can recuperate from a nervous breakdown. Rather than spreading out, the pair stick to the upstairs nursery, where the wife's mental state starts to deteriorate as she becomes fixated on the yellow wallpaper, believing there's a woman trapped inside.
