Everything We Know About Venom: The Villain, the Trailer, and More

If just hearing the name "Venom" gives you PTSD from watching Tobey Maguire do that (incredibly cringey) dance in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3, never fear: the supervillain is getting a facelift. A film centered around Venom is in the works at Sony, and Tom Hardy is taking on the role of Eddie Brock, a human who gets infected by the evil alien Symbiote. We've rounded up all the details that have trickled out about Venom so far, from exciting additions to the cast to the new trailer.

Tom Hardy Is Playing Venom

After playing Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, Tom Hardy certainly knows his way around a supervillain. The Revenant actor is attached to star as Eddie Brock — aka the titular big, bad Venom — and has actually been a fan of the character for a while now.

Information about who Michelle Williams might play was slim to none for a while, but now we know she's taking on the role of Anne Weying. "We're having fun . . . It's, um, well for me it's Tom [Hardy]," Williams told Screenrant. "I just thought, well, that guy knows what he's doing. I'm just going to go steal some of his moves, figure out what he knows. I just wanted to, you know, you're only as good as the people you play with and I really wanted to challenge myself with him as a partner."

In the comics, Weying is a successful lawyer and the ex-wife of Eddie who eventually becomes She-Venom (also referred to as "The Bride of Venom"). Williams also touched on the skills she's had to improve upon for the role: "I've done one other movie where I was asked to track a tennis ball with my eyes and pretend it was a giant creature thing. Not my favorite thing in the world to do, but it is a skill set and I'm trying to learn it."

Woody Harrelson Is Rumored to Be the Villain

Harrelson's involvement in Venom first bubbled up back in December, but now some new rumors about who exactly he'll be playing have surfaced. The actor is reportedly in talks to play Carnage, aka Cletus Kasady, according to Bleeding Cool. In the comics Cletus — a deeply twisted serial killer — first comes into contact with Eddie Brock when the pair share a cell in prison, which is how he also becomes infected with the alien symbiote. Given Cletus's already-disturbed nature, he becomes Carnage, a far more evil version of Venom.

It Will Be a Part of the Spider-Man Universe

If you're hoping to see Venom square off against Tom Holland's version of Peter Parker (from Spider-Man: Homecoming), we have good news AND bad news. The young web-slinger's story is rumored to converge with Eddie Brock's, but there's a catch — Holland will only appear as Peter, not as Spider-Man. Since both films are now a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, however, there's no telling how their paths will cross down the line.

The Story

We don't know too much about the specifics of Venom, other than it will be an origin story. Venom originally popped up in Marvel comics in 1988 and has remained one of Spider-Man's most popular enemies ever since. As Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3 shows, Venom is a gooey, black alien Symbiote that can only survive if it attaches itself to a human. Once it does, the human gains incredible powers and a flair for evil.

Since we know that Venom won't feature a showdown with Spider-Man and will instead keep Venom as the main focus, there's a good chance he won't face off against any other marquee names like Iron Man or the Hulk. It will likely revolve around Eddie Brock's initial infection and how he handles his new abilities (not great, we assume).
