To C-3PO and the Final Star Wars Trailer: How Dare You?

The time has come to say goodbye to our friends: the final trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has been released, and when the film hits theaters on Dec. 20, it will close out this chapter of the franchise. Yes, the film will be emotional — that's to be expected — but what fans might not have been expecting is some upsetting foreshadowing surrounding C-3PO's story.

In the new trailer, C-3PO is shown getting some adjustments done to his wiring. That's when Poe Dameron asks, "What are you doing there, 3PO?," and the beloved humanoid robot replies, "Taking one last look, sir, at my friends." He then delicately places his hand on a disgruntled R2-D2, and, if you have any shred of an emotional attachment to the eight prior Star Wars films, you're likely tearing up by this point.

The revealing moment has led fans to believe that C-3PO will wipe his memory or rewire his programming for the sake of the resistance and his friends. If so, I would like to have a word with J.J. Abrams. Watch the gutting trailer ahead, and read a few reactions from fans who lost their sh*t after witnessing C-3PO's heartbreaking exchange.
