The Hidden Gems of Music You Missed in 2019

Incredible new music is coming out constantly, and it can be difficult to keep up with all of your favorite artists' new releases while making new musical discoveries along the way. This year was an amazing one for music; we were blessed with new albums from Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Bon Iver, Lana Del Ray, and so many more! While we were catching up with all of these incredible albums, we missed some serious gems in the midst of it all. You may recognize some of the names on this list like Randy Houser, Marina, and Noah Cyrus, but there are also some sweet surprises that you'll be obsessed with heading into 2020.

"All to Myself" by Baby Rose

Honestly, everything by Baby Rose is completely underrated and should be on this list. Baby Rose has one of the most soulful voices I have ever heard. Her entire album To Myself is underrated, but I'm focusing on "All to Myself." With lyrics like "Baby I've been hurt enough / So I guess I'd keep it all to myself," how can you not just fall apart and love this song? It's beyond beautiful and pulled from a deep part of the soul, making it my favorite song on the list.

"Evangeline" by Randy Houser

This song is so soft, slow, and beautiful, it honestly gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it. Historically, Randy Houser has been a little more loud and fast-paced, but "Evangeline" is a breath of fresh air. Personally, I feel that the country community ignored the Magnolia album as a whole and, as a result, missed the brilliance of "Evangeline." I'm not leaving my wedding until I slow dance to this song.

"Soft to Be Strong" by Marina

Marina (previously Marina and the Diamonds) released her first album since 2015 this year, titled Love + Fear. While her previous albums have all been very mainstream, Love + Fear slipped under the radar. My personal favorite on the album is "Soft to Be Strong," proving to be a personal ballad of realization and honesty.

"People Need a Melody" by The Head and the Heart

Do yourself a favor and do not sleep on this song. When I listen to it, I see myself running through a field full of sunshine and joy and everything good. It's a breathtaking, wholesome, folk-like song with a moving melody that makes you think of the good in life.

"July" by Noah Cyrus

While Noah Cyrus is quite popular these days, she always has songs that fall completely under the radar; "July" is one of those. The first time I heard it, I was driving in my car and thought it was a nice song until I started really listening to the lyrics, and it ripped my soul in two. "July" is honest, heartbreaking, and raw. When Cyrus sings "I've done a lot of things wrong / loving you being one" . . . ouch. If you want a little extra pain, listen to the version featuring Leon Bridges.

"Yours" by Greyson Chance

Remember when Greyson Chance was just that kid singing "Paparazzi" by Lady Gaga at his sixth-grade talent show? Well, I'm here to tell you he's so much more than that! With lyrics such as "And all these miles between us, they mean nothing / oh I promise we're OK," you can't help but melt at "Yours." It's sweet and refreshing, and most people completely missed the release.

"Yours" by Jake Scott

I didn't hear about Jake Scott until earlier in 2019, and when he released "Yours," I completely fell in love with his music. At first listen, I thought this was a love song until I really focused on the lyrics and realized how intense they were (spoiler alert: opposite of a love song.) This is a gem of 2019 that we must take into 2020, reaffirming that getting rid of toxic people is important.

"Better Now" by Oh Wonder

Oh Wonder in general is extremely underrated. You may recognize them featured in the song "The Way Life Goes" by Lil Uzi Vert with a clip of their song "Landslide," which gave them some great exposure. However, they have some amazing songs all on their own that are beyond underrated. My personal favorite that they dropped this year is "Better Now." The chorus is so breathy and features some beautiful background vocals. The lyrics set an interesting and powerful scene in a hospital, and the whole thing is just a work of art.

"The Quiet" by Imogen Heap

Imogen Heap will always have a special place in my heart since the first time I heard "Hide and Seek," which you may recognize as it was sampled in Jason Derulo's "Whatcha Say," giving the track a little love that it seriously deserved. From the first second of "The Quiet," Heap's light and breathtaking voice fills your ears, and the song really doesn't stray from her classic sound. If there was an announcement for this song, I totally missed it, and you probably did, too.

"Without Her" by Ryster

"Without Her" has fewer than 200,000 streams on Spotify, and I'm deeply confused as to how we just missed this song. I don't typically listen to music like this, but the lyrics are brilliant and the beat is easy to get lost in. If you're heartbroken, make sure to blast this while alone in your room with some tissues, and probably some ice cream, too.
