DC Just Connected Its Movie and TV Universes With the Perfect Surprise Cameo

The CW aired the fifth and final part of its epic Arrowverse crossover event, "Crisis on Infinite Earths," on Tuesday, Jan. 14, and it went out with a bang. Though fans mourned the death of the DCEU's first TV hero, Oliver Queen, aka Green Arrow, the last two installments of the five-episode event featured a ton of callbacks and surprises that ended in a brand-new universe that unites the heroes of The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, Black Lightning, and Batwoman. One particular surprise made an even bigger connection in the DC, specifically between DC's TV and movie universe!

During the first part of Tuesday's double-episode finale, Flashes literally collide when Grant Gustin's Barry Allen bumps into Ezra Miller's big-screen Barry Allen. The two come face to face in S.T.A.R. Labs and are suitably confused — especially Gustin's Barry since he's just seen the destruction of all the multiverses. But Miller's Barry doesn't seem to know what's going on, asking Gustin if he's cosplaying. "Do you want a selfie, bro?" he asks, being particularly terrible at reading the room. The two even have a fanboy moment that features them examining each other's costumes.

Sadly, Gustin's Barry isn't able to explain to his movie counterpart exactly what's going down before the latter disappears — hopefully back to his timeline. After all, Miller's Flash has a standalone film coming out July 1, 2022, so he has to get some things together!

The cameo sparked a tidal wave of delighted reactions from Arrowverse fans, especially since comic book film stars don't often cross over into their TV universes. Marvel's most notable exception is Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, which began after Clark Gregg's Phil Coulson "died" in The Avengers. The show has had a few Marvel Cinematic Universe characters make appearances, including Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, and Jaimie Alexander as Sif. But this is the first time either franchise has had a major player make a cameo and it leaves a lot of questions! Could Gustin be making a cameo in the future Flash film in a scene that shows how Miller wound up in S.T.A.R. Labs? Miller's Flash mentions that he told Victor (aka Cyborg played by Ray Fisher in Justice League) this was possible, which means there's more to the story than just an accidental bump!

But, ignoring all the possibilities this opens up about the fate of the DCEU universe, Miller's cameo is just plain cool! It's awesome to see DCEU's stars interact with each other, and it's clear that the two had a blast. Gustin posted some behind-the-scenes photos of the two Flashes on set, including a photo of them hugging. "How about that? Ezra is one of a kind. So glad we could make this happen and keep it a secret until today. Thank you to @dccomics."
