In Netflix's thriller series [1] "Beef," Steven Yeun plays Danny Cho, a struggling contractor who feels responsible for the failure of his parents' motel. In the very first episode, he gets into a road rage incident with Amy Lau (played by Ali Wong [2]), a successful and wealthy businessperson who can't help but feel a lot of ennui about her life. It sets them both on a course toward mutual destruction, changing their lives and the lives of everyone they know forever.
During the series, Danny joins a Korean church in Orange County where the pastor is the husband of his ex-girlfriend. At first, Danny's involvement seems pretty self-interested, but he's taken aback by the emotional response he has to the service and the music there. Later in the series, during episode seven, he even becomes a singer in the church's praise band, too, performing "Amazing Grace" for the congregation. Danny also performs part of a cover of Incubus's "Drive." But fans might wonder: is that really Yeun singing?
The answer is yes, Yeun does his own singing in "Beef," and there are a few more places online where you can see him flex his musical talent. In a March 2021 interview with W Magazine [3], he opened up about his karaoke song — O-Town's "All or Nothing," a truly inspired choice — and sang a couple bars of it. The magazine also had some celebrities perform BTS's "Dynamite" [4] at the same time, and while most chose to speak the lyrics, Yeun chose to sing.
There are also quite a few videos of the "Walking Dead" star from his prefame days singing and playing guitar, including one from his college years [5]. He also made videos covering songs by Ray Lamontagne [6] and Alicia Keys [7].
"Beef" isn't the first project to take advantage of Yeun's singing skills. He appeared in a 2019 episode of "The Twilight [8] Zone" where his character performs karaoke, per a clip from TV Guide [9], though he made himself sound less good for the part.
On June 12, "Beef" released a bonus EP of music from the series titled "Beef: The Bonus Tracks," and it includes a full cover of Yeun singing "Drive." Listen to the track ahead.
