Ready For a Scary Good Time? Here's Where You Can Stream All the Conjuring Universe Movies

Jun 2 2021 - 1:30pm

When The Conjuring [1] premiered back in 2013, no one could have prepared us for the cinematic universe that was to follow. Created by James Wan, The Conjuring Universe has quickly become one of the best horror film franchises to exist, thanks to its use of timely jump scares. Outside of the scares, some of which still haunt our dreams, the franchise features a story that keeps the audience invested and characters we can really root for. It also helps that the movies are largely based on real events stemming from the investigations conducted by famed demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren [2], who are expertly portrayed by horror icons Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga.

To get you up to speed for the franchise's latest entry, titled The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It [3] and premiering June 4, ahead, we've broken down where you can stream all the Conjuring Universe films. As for why they seem "out of order," we've gone ahead and listed them according to their place in the universe's timeline.

The Nun

Set in 1952, 2018's The Nun is a spinoff film [4] centering on the demonic entity Valak. To keep this evil from escaping a Romanian abbey, a young nun commits suicide, leading to an investigation by the Vatican. The skeptical Father Burke teams up with the gifted Sister Irene and a local man named Frenchie. Together, the group discover not all is what it seems and the abbey might not be as holy as they first thought. Unbeknownst to them, the abbey holds a dark secret that could be the key to defeating the demon that stalks the halls.

Annabelle: Creation

Annabelle: Creation, the 2017 prequel to 2014's Annabelle, answers the question of how Annabelle came to be the evil doll we know and fear today. In 1955, 12 years after the death of their daughter Annabelle, the Mullins family open their doors to a group of orphans cared for by Sister Charlotte. Soon, the polio-stricken Janice becomes possessed when she releases a powerful demon the Mullins have kept trapped in Annabelle's room. In their grief, the Mullins had prayed to any entity that would bring their daughter back, and something demonic answered. With the entity now free from the doll, it's only a matter of time before it gets what it wants: total control.

Annabelle

Creepy dolls are almost always bad news, and Annabelle might just be the worst of them all. A prequel to The Conjuring and the Conjuring Universe's first spinoff, Annabelle follows what happens when John Ward gifts his expectant wife, Mia, with the evil doll. While Mia's Annabelle doll isn't initially evil, after a satanic ritual goes wrong and the occultists end up dead, the doll becomes possessed and starts to ruin their lives.

The Conjuring

Back in 2013, The Conjuring blew people away and kicked off what would become The Conjuring Universe. Based on real events experienced by the Perron family [8] in 1971, The Conjuring follows the investigation of the Perron family home by demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren. Despite the haunting seeming fairly innocent at first, things escalate after Lorraine discovers the house's horrific background.

Annabelle Comes Home

If you thought Annabelle could no longer do any harm once she was locked away, 2019's Annabelle Comes Home will make you think again. When the Warrens leave their daughter Judy in the care of a babysitter, Annabelle tricks the babysitter's friend into releasing her. This causes all hell to break loose as the Warrens' artifacts room springs to life thanks to Annabelle's meddling.

The Curse of La Llorona

The Curse of La Llorona from 2019 was meant to have a stronger connection to The Conjuring Universe, but it was marketed as a stand-alone film. Its big connection is Tony Amendola, who reprises his role from Annabelle as Father Perez. After ignoring Patricia Alvarez's warning, social worker Anna Tate-Garcia takes the woman's children to a child-services shelter, where they are killed by the malevolent spirit La Llorona. It doesn't take long for La Llorona to set her sights on Anna's family as the social worker does all in her power to keep the cycle from repeating.

The Conjuring 2

After a traumatic vision during their investigation of the Amityville house, Ed and Lorraine Warren decide it's time for a vacation. Their trip is cut short when they're called to investigate poltergeist activity at an Enfield council house [13]. At first, all signs point to it being a hoax by the Hodgson family. Eventually, the Warrens realize everything is real, and the entity makes them its next target.

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It

Based on the murder case that shocked the real Ed and Lorraine [16], The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It features the first time in US history that a murder suspect used demonic possession as a defense. Several months after the possession of David Glatzel, Arne Johnson is found bloody and stumbling on the side of the road. When his landlord is found dead, all eyes are on Arne as he claims to have committed the murder while under the influence of something evil.

Watch The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It on HBO Max [17] starting June 4.
