Do you hear that? That's the sound of me and all of my friends stampeding to Applebee's [1] to throw back a few of their new Dollar Hurricanes. Yes, the restaurant chain is back with a new Neighborhood Drink of the Month [2], and this time it's taking some inspiration from a classic cocktail that was popularized in New Orleans.
Dollar Hurricanes are closely modeled after the sweet alcoholic beverage originally created by Pat O'Brien [3] in the 1940s, and they'll be sold at participating Applebee's restaurants in celebration of Mardi Gras [4]. Applebee's rendition of the drink is served in a 10-ounce mug, and is a mixture of rum with passion fruit, black cherry, orange, and lime juices. And to really get you in the spirit of Mardi Gras — if you're not lucky enough to make it down to the Big Easy yourself — the cocktail comes with a feathered mask and decorative beads. Dollar Hurricanes are being sold throughout the month of February, up until the actual date of Mardi Gras, which is March 5.
