It's pretty common these days for good teachers to get creative with getting their kids excited for class and assignments [2], often encouraging students to get creative themselves and come up with pop-culture-inspired ways to express their understanding of material. When Mrs. Merlette filmed a video for Instagram of her and her third graders singing a math-inspired remix to "Old Town Road" by Lil Nas X featuring Billy Rae Cyrus (and a hyped Melissa & Doug plush giraffe?), she likely thought just sharing her energetic kids was the peak of her day . . . until Lil Nas X himself saw it online and tweeted directly at her.
