Anyone who drives has totally been faked out by a handicapped spot in a busy parking lot before — you think you found an open space only to realize you can't park there without a sticker.

Ten-year-old Kaitlyn Barringer isn't old enough to drive, but due to her rare genetic condition, called hypophosphatasia [1] — characterized by bone deformity and muscle weakness, which has caused her to face three surgeries and 30 fractures — her mom's car has a handicap parking permit.

On Aug. 28, Kaitlyn and her mom, Naomi, parked in a handicap space at their local Target store for about 10 minutes and returned to find a slip of paper on their windshield accusing them of being lazy, calling them idiots, and informing them that their license plate number had been reported to the local police.

"I observed you parking in this Handicapped parking place today. It appears that you are not really handicapped — perhaps just in a hurry, or worse, just plain lazy.

In case you don't know, these spots are reserved for people who are
truly handicapped, and because of idiots like you, they have to park farther away or not be able to come here at all.

Before you throw this away, know that I have called in your license plate number to the local police. Have a great day!"

The typed note that made a snap judgment about Kaitlyn has made her very upset [2], and she hopes that others in similar positions to her never have to receive anything like it. "I am disabled and they may not know that, and I can understand because I do look normal, but I don't think they have to do that. This made me really sad . . . "
