Three children were taken into protective custody, and their parents arrested, after police found the family of five living in a car full of garbage and clothes outside of a Florida Walmart. The two youngest children, boys aged 4 and 1, were initially handed over to relatives and then taken into protective custody. The oldest child, a 7-year-old girl, was taken to a hospital to treat second degree burns covering her back.
The parents are being held in a Florida jail on charges of child neglect. The father claims the whole situation is a misunderstanding and says the family had simply fallen on hard times. After being evicted from their apartment, he said the family had no choice but to spend the night in their car.
