This Girl Asked Steph Curry Why His Sneakers Only Came in Boys' Sizes, and He Had the Best Response

Nov 29 2018 - 11:05am

This is Steph Curry. He's a three-time NBA champion, a two-time MVP, and a father to three adorable children. He's arguably one of the best point guards the league has ever seen, but off the court, he's a family man with a heart of gold [1], and that became more obvious than ever thanks to a little girl named Riley Morrison. Late last week, 9-year-old Riley (who coincidentally has the same name as Steph's oldest daughter) wrote a letter to the NBA player expressing her concern over the lack of girls' sizes in his Under Armour kids' basketball sneaker line [2]. Riley's dad, Chris, shared the now-viral letter from his daughter [3], and it's going to melt your heart.

"I asked my dad to buy me the new Curry 5s because I'm starting a new basketball season. My dad and I visited the Under Armour website and were disappointed to see that there were no Curry 5s for sale under the girls' section. However, they did have them for sale under the boys' section, even to customize," Riley wrote. "I know you support girl athletes because you have two daughters and you host an all-girls basketball camp. I hope you can work with Under Armour to change this because girls want to rock the Curry 5s too."

As a (former?) tomboy and avid sports fan, all I have to say is: BRAVO! This little girl recognizing the lack of gender equality in the sports world [4] at such a young age is impressive, and it's a sign of hope for the younger generation. Not only did she recognize the need for change, but she's also making that change a reality [5].

Just a few days after her letter went viral, the basketball player responded [6] with some inspiring words. "I appreciate your concern and have spent the last 2 days talking to Under Armour about how we can fix the issue," Steph wrote. "We are changing this NOW! I want to make sure you can wear my kicks proudly." He even offered her a pair of his newest sneakers — the Curry 6s — right when they release and an invitation to a special event for International Women's Day. It's so awesome that this little girl's desire for equality is changing the way Under Armour will sell Steph's shoes. Read on to see both letters in their entirety and how others are praising both Riley and Steph for this exchange.
