If You Thought Stress Over the SATs Was Crazy, Wait Until You See What's Happening in India

Cheating during school exams has always been an issue, but never has it been as rampant — or as brazen — as what occurred in the state of Bihar in India yesterday. During the country's school exam period, parents were seen scaling the school walls to pass cheat sheets to their high school students sitting for the tests. For the incident in the video above, 55 Class 10 students were expelled from the school. According to reports, more than 1,000 students who were sitting for Class 10 and Class 12 exams were banned from school [1] over the past two days.

More than 1.4 million students across the state of Bihar will sit for the high-stakes 10th-grade exams. If the students don't pass the exams, they may not continue their education. Bihar is India's least educated state [2], with a literacy rate of only 63 percent. So cheating has become widespread. Reporters who were covering the annual event photographed students copying answers out of textbooks and passing notes during the testing period. Police have been stationed outside the testing centers, but according to one report, parents are bribing them to look the other way so their kids can smuggle in the textbooks. The state has already canceled exams at four testing centers after cheating at those facilities couldn't be controlled. The testing period doesn't end until March 24.

"What can the government do to stop cheating if parents and relatives are not ready to cooperate? Should the government give orders to shoot them?" Bahir Education Minister PK Shahi said [3].

We're not sure what the solution is here, but it certainly makes parental frenzy over the SATs seem tame in comparison.
