Kelly Clarkson has always been pretty candid when it comes to her parenting choices, whether she's sharing a funny Instagram of her 3-year-old daughter, River, on a particularly sleepless night [1] or letting us in on her son Remington's first-ever experience with Nutella [2]. Now, she's made the bold decision to open up about the fact that she spanks her kids.
In an interview with Radio.com [3], the singer explained her stance on disciplining her kids using this method. "I'm not above a spanking, which people aren't necessarily into. And I don't mean like hitting her hard, I just mean a spanking," she said. "My parents spanked me, I did fine in life and I feel fine about it. But I do that as well, too."
She also explained that the spanking never comes out of the blue. "I warn her, I'm like, 'Hi, I'm gonna spank you on your bottom if you don't stop right now. Like, this is ridiculous.'"
But spanking her kiddos in public is a different story. The singer admitted that she's more apprehensive in those situations since so many people take issue with the idea. "So that's a tricky thing when you're out in public, 'cause then people are like, you know, they think that's wrong or something, but I find nothing wrong with a spanking."
Kelly attributes her controversial parenting decision to growing up with Southern parents who disciplined her in the same manner. "I'm from the South, y'all, so we get spankings. My mom would call the principal if I ever ended up in the principal's office and give permission for her to spank me," she said. "I'm a well-rounded individual with a lot of character, so I think it's fine."
