This Kid Called Out His Teacher For "Lying" About Christopher Columbus β€” and Just Wow

Feb 2 2018 - 8:35am

Up until recently, most people were under the impression that Christopher Columbus sailed across the ocean blue in 1492 and discovered America. And although we have an entire day to celebrate Christopher Columbus's "discoveries," it's become well-known that in reality he stumbled upon parts of the Caribbean [1], specifically the Bahamas and the small island of Hispaniola, and enslaved and murdered the people he found living there. In fact, he never actually set foot in the continental United States at all. In a now-viral post shared by Facebook user Alanya Kolberg [2], a boy named King Johnson decided to give his teacher a much-needed history [3] lesson on the subject:

Today was not a good learning day. Blah blah blah, I only wanted to hear you not talking. You said something wrong and I cannot listen when I hear lies. My mom said that the only Christopher we acknowledge is Wallace. Because Columbus didn't find our country the Indians did. I like to have Columbus Day off but I want you not to teach me lies. That is all. My question for the day is how can white people teach black history? King Johnson.

And he's not wrong. But rather than having an open discussion with King on American history, his teacher just disappproved of that day's journal entry, writing: "King, I am very disappointed in your journal today." King simply wrote back "OK" and that was that.

As expected, Twitter users had a field day with the post:

I hope my kids cut into their teacher if they ever get to lying (which they will) about Christopher Columbus. They gone get kicked outta class and imma come pick them up so we can celebrate πŸ˜‚

"My mom said that the only Christopher we acknowledge is Wallace" and "I want you to not teach me lies" took me out.

Whether or not you agree with King's methods, here's hoping his viral post opens up a larger dialogue on what Christopher Columbus actually did, and why we still have a day dedicated to him in the first place.
