Having a baby requires a lot of new skills — and a new wardrobe for your postpartum body, and even more new clothing items when you're breastfeeding. Having just had my first baby, I've bought and tried so many new pieces of clothes, and it's been a massive exercise in trial and error. Thankfully, I found the brand Kindred Bravely, which was created by mother-of-two Deeanne Akerson, and a ton of my postbaby clothing woes have been solved. From the perfect bra for nighttime feedings to the best pajamas I've ever owned, here are the must-have items for new moms, including stuff for breastfeeding and C-section recovery.

High Waist Postpartum Underwear & C-Section Recovery Panties

High Waist Postpartum Underwear & C-Section Recovery Panties

If you're expecting, you've probably heard tales of the glorious mesh underwear the hospital gives you after you give birth, whether you deliver vaginally or via C-section. Believe the hype: they're that comfortable. But when you run out of those hospital-issued underwear and you had a C-section, your normal underwear will irritate your new incision. High-waisted underwear are key, and after I first made the mistake of trying some scratchy drugstore brand on a quick postbaby errand, I found these. Kindred Bravely's High Waist Postpartum Underwear & C-Section Recovery Panties ($20) are made of smooth, comfy material that won't rub your scar the wrong way, and the lace detail makes them much more attractive than some other options you'll find out there. If you have a planned C-section, buy these now.

The Jane Maternity & Nursing Thermal Pajamas

The Jane Maternity & Nursing Thermal Pajamas

I've never been more passionate about a pair of pajamas. The Jane Maternity & Nursing Thermal Pajamas ($33) are the softest, coziest PJs I've ever owned. The leggings have a high waist, which is so comfortable on your postpartum belly (and/or C-section scar), and the long-sleeved top has a slit for easy breastfeeding. The fabric is somehow superthin but warm for cool nights (or colder body temperatures, a weird postpartum side effect that hit me), and even if these are warmer than you want to sleep in (especially at first, when you might be having those annoying night sweats), then they're great to wear lounging around the house in those early days, when you don't want to get dressed and wear real clothes but still want to look semi-human. I got them as a gift, and plan on to pay it forward by giving them to every pregnant friend I have.

Trying to find your perfect nursing bras is one of the most annoying shopping duties you'll have after the baby is born. Your don't actually know what size you are because you don't have time to go get professionally fitted, your size is all over the place when you breastfeed anyway, and you have to do most of your shopping online, wondering if the bra you just clicked "add to cart" on will actually work for you. Let me at least introduce you to the perfect sleeping bra, The French Terry Racerback Nursing & Sleep Bra ($30). The cups pull apart for supereasy access (a must during a sleepy nighttime feeding), and the fabric is so soft, but very supportive, even for large breasts. Make sure you consult Kindred Bravely's sizing chart to order the right size, and they have great, responsive sizing consultants who can help you too.

The Louisa Ultra High-Waisted Maternity & Pregnancy Leggings

The Louisa Ultra High-Waisted Maternity & Pregnancy Leggings

Leggings are a new-mom must; I resisted leggings for pregnancy since I don't normally wear them, but I absolutely needed them for postpartum and regretted I didn't buy them sooner. Kindred Bravely's Louisa Ultra High-Waisted Maternity & Pregnancy Leggings ($90) are good for both phases, but it's really about wearing them post-baby. With these, you can skip wearing a belly binder, which you need after a C-section, though the thick material will support you no matter how you gave birth.

The Simply Sublime Maternity & Nursing Tank

The Simply Sublime Maternity & Nursing Tank

I didn't know why I'd need nursing tanks so much until I had my baby and started breastfeeding. Yes, you can wear them on their own, but the real key is wearing them under your normal tops when breastfeeding. Just pull up your outer top, unhook the straps on the tank, and boom — now you can wear your old tops instead of investing in all new shirts for nursing. The Simply Sublime Maternity & Nursing Tank ($45) gets points for its stretchy, supportive fabric and smoothing silhouette.
