Kmart is one of the latest brands to prove it realizes that children with special needs deserve to see themselves represented in mainstream media. Its new ad features boys and girls playing with Barbies and Legos [1], dancing along to the tune of "Shout," when all of a sudden a girl with Down Syndrome comes running on camera in a pink emu costume. Her five seconds on camera are almost a "blink and you'll miss it moment," but it's a win for children and adults with special needs who rarely, if ever, see major brands normalizing disabilities.
