1 Mom's Heartfelt Plea to Put an End to Changing Her Son on the Floor of Public Bathrooms

May 28 2016 - 4:03pm

With the world focused on the transgender bathroom debate [1], Shannon Campbell, mother of 16-year-old Brennan, who has Cri du Chat syndrome, also has feelings about public bathrooms. "Everyone deserves to use bathrooms safely. But the population that is left behind is the disabled. I will be bold enough to show what I mean," she said in a Facebook post [2] that features a photo of her son being changed on the floor of a public restroom.

In the post, Campbell shares some of hers and Brennan's struggles: "Taking him to a public restroom is nearly impossible and not safe. . . . Toilets are not big enough, changing tables are only for infants and toddlers. Safety bars are too low . . . Hospitals, malls, medical facilities, amusement parks, and tourist attractions should have at least one bathroom for individuals like my son [3]."
