This Woman's Breastfeeding Photo Shoot Is Meant to Empower Other Black Moms, and We're All For It

For Jane Johnson, a mom with a nearly 1-year-old son named Karter, breastfeeding has always been a priority. After enlisting some help from Brian Pride — a photographer in Birmingham, AL — Jane showcased her passion for nursing in a stunning photo series — and we're taking notes.

"The photo shoot is something I've been wanting to do," Jane told POPSUGAR. "Brian reached out to me about some ideas and I told him about what I had in mind. It all came together like Thanksgiving dinner! It's important to me to showcase breastfeeding because it needs to be normalized. We live in a world where people sexualize breastfeeding or are uneducated about it."

Although breastfeeding for nearly a year hasn't exactly been a walk in the park for Jane, her online community is a big part of why she stuck with it for so long.

"Everyone needs to know the benefits for baby and mother," explained Jane. "It hasn't been an easy road for me personally, but as long as you have the support, breastfeeding can really work out. My village was my support group, Chocolate Milk Mommies — a nonprofit group dedicated to raising breastfeeding awareness in low-income areas. I hope to empower black women with breastfeeding, showing them breastfeeding is normal and natural. I want to inform black women they are not alone and we have each other. I want to offer encouragement, support, and love."
