Two Chicago-area kids are recovering and their mom is facing attempted murder charges after she allegedly forced them to drink apple juice laced with a psychoactive drug [1] in an effort to get revenge on their father. Krystle El Khatib is accused of crushing up benzodiazepine pills — an antianxiety drug — and dumping the powder into her 9-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter's apple juice. She then made them each drink two glasses of the juice, even threatening to hit her son if he didn't do as he was told. Once they drank the juice, she downed a cocktail of benzodiazepine and painkillers in an attempt to kill herself.

The next morning the son woke up vomiting. When he couldn't wake his mom, he texted his dad, who took the kids to the hospital, where they were diagnosed with poisoning.

Authorities say El Khatib was upset with the father for not spending enough time with their family. The day before the poisoning, she sent a text to the father saying, "At least if I go to hell, I've already been there. The kids go to heaven. Peace from all." She told a social worker in the hospital that "she brought her children into this world and she can take them out."

The kids are currently in their father's custody, and a judge set El Khatib's bond at $1.5 million.
