In a satirical video in partnership with the American Heart Association, Nick Offerman starts, "The government tells us we need to offer healthy choices in school lunches, but what is healthy, really?" He holds up an apple and a corn dog in response to his own question, then says, "The answer may surprise you."
Offerman is then transported into every human's dream world — a pizza farm with orchards of taquito trees and fields of sloppy joes — but before you book your next vacation there, know that this sardonic video is actually meant to address the ongoing debate in Congress over what it means to provide healthy school lunches.
With his classic dry humor on display, Offerman chomps on a slice of pepperoni pizza "straight from Mother Earth," while a little girl bites into a taquito that has been "soaking up the minerals and vitamins from the sun," because "kids know what their bodies need." It's all in the spirit of fun — but our kids' health should not be a laughing matter, and the fact that that is still up for debate is worrying.
The American Heart Association is urging parents to tell lawmakers to reauthorize the Hunger-Free Kids Act, "which updated the nutrition standards for school meals and established nutrition standards for other foods sold in schools" in 2010, through its website [1]. Watch the video for a good laugh and a strong message.
