The Paradoxes of Parenthood

Nov 25 2014 - 6:02am

So you knew that being a parent was going to be emotional, but did you know that you'd feel constantly conflicted? From the silly little things to the moments that truly tug at our heartstrings, there are at least two sides to every decision that a mom or dad makes and every feeling that we feel. Which of these internal conflicts can you most relate to?

You covet a grown-up date night like nothing else.

But spend half the night checking in with the sitter.

You're dying to know what this little person will be like as an adult.

But wait! Not this soon.

All morning, you count the minutes until nap time.

Then find yourself missing him when he's asleep.

You're confident in your decision to be a stay-at-home mom.

But when you hear about a former colleague's promotion, you can't help but wonder: "What if?"

You're passionate about your career.

But postkids, your mind is simply elsewhere.

You're having the time of your life on your girls' getaway.

And feel sort of guilty for not feeling guilty about it (the irony!).

You'll wake up at 4 a.m. and stand in line for this year's Tickle Me Elmo.

But without fail, they always get more excited about the box (what's that about?!).

The one and only time you've EVER forgotten the diaper bag at home . . .

. . . Is literally the only time you've ever really, really needed it.

You bite the bullet and make the (not small) investment in ice-hockey equipment . . .

And the next day, she lets you know that soccer's more her thing.

You can't wait for them to be more self-sufficient.

But once they are, you miss holding their little hands.
