Restaurant Denies Customers a Second Alcoholic Drink If They're With Kids

Jul 24 2017 - 2:38pm

Responses are divided over the recent news of a not-so-new policy at Peddlers Bar and Bistro in Clifton Park, NY: parents are limited to one alcoholic drink with dinner if they're driving home with a child [1]. The policy, which has been around for over seven years, was instated by the restaurant's general manager, Melisa Gravelle, who says the reason behind the limitation is very important to her.

"We love children. Everybody loves children and children don't have a voice," she told News 10. "I could never live with myself knowing that I killed somebody driving. I could never do that so and it's a choice that you can avoid." Gravelle says that some of the restaurant's waitresses have had difficult experiences with customers who disagreed with the rule but that if a patron is unwilling to obey the policy, they'll be asked to leave. Bartender Cheryl Faas says the policy is always politely explained upfront to parents dining with children.

Although the policy comes from a good place — Gravelle cares about children and wants to do her part to ensure her customers are safe — those who oppose it wonder if this rule is fair for a restaurant to have. Legally, however, Peddlers does have the right to enforce its rule.

Would you eat here with your kids knowing about this policy?
