Normally when conjoined twins are mentioned in the news, it has only to do with complicated surgeries to separate them [1] — but one family photographer, Mateus André [2], decided to bring these delicate surgeries to the public's attention by capturing the babies' beauty in a series of photographs [3].
The parents of the 3-month-old twins Maria Clara and Maria Eduarda Oliveira Santana are hopeful [4] about their daughters' awaited surgery, but their condition is difficult. André wanted to share the photographs to highlight children and babies with disabilities:
I have a very big responsibility to show other sides of childhood, because reality is full of faces, and the ones that need more attention are those people who are treated by society as insignificant people. Photography has the power to break such concepts and truly draw attention to something valuable, since these people are not alone in the world.
