Parents in Rocky Mount, NC, are outraged that local school administrators won't tell them if and how they are disciplining six white high school teens who were photographed [1] wearing white sweatshirts and white cone-like hats and pointing their fingers like guns at the camera. The photo, which many community members believe is KKK-inspired, was originally posted to Instagram over Thanksgiving break — just days after the emotionally charged Michael Brown decision was handed down in Ferguson, MO.

The Nash County Sheriff's Office has interviewed both the girls in the photo and their parents only to find "no laws that were violated." But that's not enough for community members. Given North Carolina's history of racial tension — there are several established KKK groups in the state — they're calling on school officials to step in, something the school is not speaking openly about.

"You've got to trust us to know that we'll work with these wonderful people on the board to do what is right for the children of this school system," said board member Wayne Doll at a community forum yesterday. "I hope you'll know that."
