Snow Ice Cream

Next Time It Snows, Use Some to Make This Delicious Ice Cream Recipe!

The following post was originally featured on We Know Stuff and written by Denine Anderson, who is part of POPSUGAR Select Moms.

Back when our kids were little, they were obsessed with a show called Little Bear. He was a playful, little, brown bear that was always surrounded by loving friends and family. Anyways, the kids watched this show every single day and loved this silly little bear to pieces.

One day, we were watching it together and Little Bear and his family got stuck in a snow storm. It was a very bad storm and they were going to have to ride it out at Emily's Grandmother's house. In true Little Bear fashion, no one knew what would happen, but it would most certainly be okay! Because that's just how this show rolled.

While they were waiting for the storm to pass, Emily's Grandmother decided to whip up her super simple Snow Cream recipe. I can still see the look of astonishment on my children's faces. It was hysterical.

Immediately following the episode, they wanted to know if we could try making ice cream from snow. I had no idea if it would work, but since it had just snowed the night before, we decided to test it out. After some trial and error, we got the snow-to-milk-to-honey ratio down just pat and we were able to re-create Granny's recipe.

Although my kids are much older now, but they still freak out whenever it snows. They dive into their snow pants, clamber into their jackets, and run outside as fast as they can. And, they still like to make snow cream with me, which makes me deliriously happy. It's kind of become our thing and I look forward to it every year.

I will leave you with some tips for making ice cream from snow. Since I've made it so many times, I really do know how to make the best tasting snow cream:

  • always use fresh snow (this way you know it hasn't been stepped on by any critters)
  • fluffy, white snow works best (icy snow just makes more ice)
  • be prepared to stir and stir and stir some more
  • eat it as soon as you make it (it doesn't store like regular ice cream does)

Regardless of how well it turns out, or doesn't, I encourage you all to give it a try. This is one of those memories in the making things that I love to do with my kids – and I hope they end up doing it with their kids when the time comes.
