Halloween [2] is meant to be scary, but there's more that's frightening about the commercial holiday than fake blood in horror flicks and people walking around in vampire costumes. Being a parent on and leading up to Oct. 31 is a ton of fun, but can also be a little anxiety-inducing. We had real parents weigh in on the parts of Halloween that are most scary [3] to them, from tiny things to bigger fears.

Read through for 13 of their responses.

  1. "Making sure they safe while out tricking or treating [4]." — Jennette [5]
  2. "Someone handing out spiked/poisoned candy." — Morgan [6]
  3. "Crossing the street. People drive like maniacs in my neighborhood." — Dawn [7]
  4. "Finding the perfect costumes." — Terilee [8]
  5. "The gore and masks today.. totally gross and in todays society you never know who is behind that mask." — BethAnn [9]
  6. "The haunted/horror houses. No thank you." — Sara [10]

  1. "The thought of the health effects of all the candy." — Kristen [12]
  2. "The cost of the costumes." — Nniea [13]
  3. "Someone handing out candy that they poisoned [14] and then my kids being mad at me cause I threw away all the soft candy." — Beverly [15]
  4. "The Sugar Rush!!!!!" — Dona [16]
  5. "6 ft tall teens...way to old to be demanding candy!!" — Christina [17]
  6. "Something happening to my older son's costume [18] at school." — Liz [19]

And perhaps the most honest and relatable answer of them all:

  1. "Getting busted by kids as I steal all the [Reese's] peanut butter cups from their stash." — Teresa [20]
