Toddler's Smartphone Savvy Saves His Life After Car Is Stollen With Him Inside

Jan 14 2015 - 8:18am

Talk about a lifesaving device! On Tuesday morning, Elizabeth Barrios drove to her baby's day care center and left her car unlocked and running as she ran her baby inside. When she walked out of the center, she watched in horror as a man drove off in her car with her 3-year-old son [1], Aiden, in the backseat. Police then called the mom's mobile phone, which she had left in the car, and Aiden did what many tech-savvy kids do — he answered his mom's ringing phone.

On the other end of the line were officers who were hoping to speak with the car thief to negotiate the boy's release. Instead, they found Aiden, who told his mom that the thief had driven the car somewhere he didn't recognize and ran off with items from her purse. It seems that the phone call scared the burglar away, leaving the tot alone in the car. It was then that police officers told him to honk the car horn until authorities could find him — which they did, about three blocks from the day care center.

"He was scared," Lieutenant Tim Scott said. "But it was a good thing at his age that he was able to get himself out of his child seat and honk the horn."

Aiden was uninjured and was back in his mother's arms 45 minutes after the incident began. Aiden may have just earned himself a phone of his own!
