People Are Pissed About the Way Men Are Portrayed in This Walmart Holiday Ad

I think we can all agree that the whole "men are idiot slobs with awful memories" trope is a little tired. Sure, there are men out there who will walk past their dirty laundry sitting next to the hamper rather than put it in the basket and men who can't remember a birthday to save their damn life (my boyfriend will know that is directed at him). But you know what? There are plenty of women who are the exact same way. Which is why some people are a little up in arms over a current Walmart ad [1] that portrays men as morons who don't realize that maybe they should have picked up a few Christmas gifts before Dec. 23 (procrastination is one thing, but the guy in this ad looks like he somehow avoided the obvious consumerism of the season and truly forgot that gifts are a thing people give this time of year).

In the ad spot, a young boy ticks off his Advent calendar and announces, "It's almost Christmas, Dad!" Then, a dopey "Oh, f*ck! That's this month?!" expression crosses the man's face just as the classic tune "It's Raining Men" begins to play. From there, we see the dad and a handful of other men who used the Walmart app to purchase last-minute gifts [2] picking them up at the customer service desk. The woman at the counter giggles and laughs ("Oh, you guys are so forgetful, how typical and adorable") at each man as he picks up his packages — that is, until a woman shows up at the desk and her expression changes to confusion.

How could it be that on this, the 23 of December, there's an actual female human who wasn't fully prepared for Christmas in November and needed to buy a last-minute gift? HOW?!

"I am someone who has a high tolerance for a lot of bullsh*t, and who is not easily offended, but something strikes a nerve when media/commercials portray the idiot adult male," Reddit user IT_Chef wrote in reference to the ad. "I know I may sound a bit shrill here, but this stereotype just upsets me to the highest degree."

Other Reddit users agreed with him, one commenting: "I would not call the commercial grossly offensive, but, as a busy father trying to stay on top of it all, the trope is overused, stale, and unfunny." Another added: "My husband has already bought and wrapped two gifts for me. I haven't even managed to look for him. I AM that person in the commercial. It's not just men."

However, a few disagreed, mentioning that their husbands never buy holiday gifts or that their wives take on most of the holiday to-do list [3] every year.

Regardless of whether you're the partner who does it all, the one who tends to be more forgetful, or the one who runs on procrastination, can we all agree that these traits are those of humans, not of a particular gender?
