American Girl must have known its fans could use a little extra joy this year, so when the toy company unveiled its 2022 Girl of the Year as Corinne Tan, a Chinese American kid from Aspen, CO, it also — for the very first time — introduced a new American Girl companion doll in the form of Corinne's little sister, Gwynn.

An important reason for this bonus doll? Corinne, although brave and surefooted while hitting the slopes, struggles to adjust to her new blended family — she lives with her dad and younger sibling — and has an equally hard time speaking up when faced with xenophobic comments. It's with the love and support of Gwynn that she finds the courage to advocate for herself at home and outside of it.

"What I really hope is that there is some part of Corinne's story that makes readers feel seen, whether it's because they are Asian American or because they're part of a blended family, or they love skiing."

"What I really hope is that there is some part of Corinne's story that makes readers feel seen, whether it's because they are Asian American or because they're part of a blended family, or they love skiing," Wendy Wan-Long Shang, the award-winning author who created two new books based on Corinne, said in a statement. "When readers feel seen, they realize that they matter and their experiences matter, and that they are meant to be the stars of their own stories."

Both the 18-inch Corinne doll and the 14.5-inch Gwynn doll were created in consultation with Shang and a team of Colorado-based advisors, who weighed in on everything from ski safety to local knowledge to modern Chinese history. American Girl designers also worked with this team to hone the girls' physical appearances. In seeking authenticity and accuracy, they created several exclusive features, from hairstyle and skin tone to newly designed eyes.

To further celebrate Corinne, American Girl is partnering with AAPI Youth Rising, a student-led nonprofit that is bringing awareness to the rise in anti-Asian sentiments with a mission to turn small actions into positive change. To support them, American Girl is donating $25,000, and customers can donate to the organization through American Girl stores until Dec. 30, 2022.

"As we celebrate the new year, we're excited to welcome Corinne and Gwynn Tan to our popular Girl of the Year lineup with meaningful stories that reflects what it means to be an American girl today," Jamie Cygielman, American Girl's general manager, said in a statement. "We created Corinne to be a positive role model our fans can look up to and learn from as we all work toward a world where everyone is treated fairly and with respect."
