Touching New Series Council of Dads Shows the Aftermath of a Dad Dying From Cancer

Looking for the next show that will tug at your heartstrings? Look no further than NBC's new drama, Council of Dads [1]. Based on the 2010 memoir written by New York Times best-selling author Bruce Feiler, the new series follows the life of a father who is diagnosed with cancer [2].

"At 43, Feiler, the father of two young daughters, learned he had a life-threatening tumor in his left leg," a press release reads. "Confronting the possibility that he may not be around to help his girls grow up [3], he reached out to six men from all passages in his life and asked them to be present through the passages in his daughters' lives. And he called this group of men the 'The Council of Dads.'"

According to Deadline [5], the series is based on Bruce's life, but the premise is slightly different. In the show, the dad (played by Tom Everett Scott) is a father to five children — one of whom is transgender [6] — and passes away from his illness early in the series. Fortunately for his kids, they're surrounded by a group of men who step up in his absence.

Sure to bring tears to your eyes more than once, Council of Dads premieres on ABC on March 10 at 10 p.m. ET, following This Is Us. Watch the trailer above to get a look at this brand-new family drama.
