James Corden and his wife, TV producer Julia Carey, share three children, and the host has said his family is a major reason he decided to step away from his job at "The Late Late Show With James Corden." [1] Speaking with Drew Barrymore [2] in January, the actor reflected on how his busy filming schedule — which included acting commitments on top of his talk show — was taking time away from the kids.

After his son, Max, asked him why he was so busy, James recalled, "I got in the car and I called my wife Jules and I said, 'I've realized, best-case scenario, we have six more summers where Max is like, even remotely wants to be around us, and I cannot waste another one.'" He didn't want to lose time with his kids for the sake of his career, he said. James explained, "I will be a mess on that last show, I will cry my eyes out. But I will know in my core that the best thing for me and the best thing for us as a family is to put down some roots in London, and it feels absolutely right in every single way."

The couple, who married in 2012, are pretty private about their kids' lives and don't share photos of them on social media. But they have talked about them in interviews. James has also taken his kids to a few Los Angeles Lakers games, where they've cheered on the team from courtside seats. Here's what to know about James's kids, Max, Carey, and Charlotte.

Max McCartney Kimberley Corden

Max Corden was born March 22, 2011. He is James and Julia's oldest child and their only son. James revealed in 2013 that Max's middle name is McCartney in honor of legendary Beatles member Paul McCartney — and that the decision was actually a bribe. During a 2013 episode of "The Graham Norton Show," James explained that he wanted McCartney to appear in a sketch for the Comic Relief fundraiser, and he used his son as leverage.

"I laid it on very thick, telling him, 'People won't die if you do our sketch.' It makes it very difficult for people to say no," James said on the show, per Ireland's Independent [3]. "He said, 'Bloody hell, James, I've heard some groveling in my time.' I then said, 'That's nothing — if you'd said no, I was going to say I would name my unborn child after you.' To which he said, 'If you promise to do that, I'll do the sketch.'" Max's other middle name, Kimberley, is James's middle name.

"Mamma Mia!" actor Dominic Cooper is Max's godfather. James and Julia were first introduced by Dominic when he and James were roommates.

Carey Corden

Carey Corden was born Oct. 27, 2014. Carey, who is named in honor of Julia's maiden name, was born just before James and his family made the move from the UK to the US so he could start "The Late Late Show." Shortly after Carey's birth, James reflected on his new gig in comparison to being a dad, saying, "What's more scary? Being a father. No question. It's just a TV show. It all pales in significance," per People [4]. He said of Carey, then a newborn, "She just grins really big. She's a cutie!"

Charlotte Corden

Charlotte Corden was born on Dec. 12, 2017. James was scheduled to host his late-night show the day Julia went into labor and had to call his close friend Harry Styles [5] to host that night in his place. Bryan Cranston hosted the show the following night while James was still out with Julia. James jokingly told People [6] in early 2018 that he and Julia hadn't originally planned to have a third child because there isn't enough space in London, but they have much more room in Los Angeles.
