I became a body pillow believer during the second trimester of my first pregnancy when the weight of my expanding belly triggered lower back pain that resulted in my first string of restless nights. By the end of the week, I tore open an Amazon package stuffed with the first decently rated pregnancy pillow I could find. The enormous C-shaped cushion helped my back, but its size took up two thirds of our bed, and its slipcover was nearly impossible to get back on after washing — I cried actual tears during this process and managed to rip my slipcover pretty badly.

I'm expecting my second child and had the opportunity to test the Bbhugme Pregnancy Pillow ($175) for review purposes. Since my last pregnancy pillow certainly helped ease my discomfort despite its serious setbacks, I was anxious to see if this pregnancy pillow could be the one.

What Makes the Bbhugme Pregnancy Pillow Special

What Makes the Bbhugme Pregnancy Pillow Special

Created by three chiropractors from Norway, the pillow is filled with hypoallergenic, eco-friendly microbeads that mold to your body to offer support around your belly, lower back, pelvis, knees, and ankles. The elastic fabric of the slipcover is incredibly smooth and soft but also strong enough that it won't rip when you have to remove it. It also feels deliciously cool while you sleep instead of causing you to overheat, like other pillows can.

Instead of having scratchy zippers or velcro, the ends are secured with silicone ties — which, no joke, can later be used as baby teething rings — making it easier to remove and wash the outer sleeve and adjust for desired firmness. It's still no picnic to remove, wash, and put the slipcover back on, but it's similar to the hassle of washing a duvet cover. It took me a minute to get it back on, but I didn't cry during the process.

Aside from function, the Bbhugme pillow's form is beautiful! It actually looks like a customized lumbar pillow for my bed. Because it's offered in three solid colors, you can choose a palette that complements your decor. I went with stone, a pretty, midtone gray (pictured here) and love it.

How the Bbhugme Pillow Supports Better Sleep

How the Bbhugme Pillow Supports Better Sleep

I like how the long, flexible shape supports the full length of my body. I can carve out a little enclave for my belly, rest my top arm on top, and wrap my legs around it or even stretch and straighten them completely while still keeping them fully supported.

If I want to switch sides during the night, all I have to do is keep my legs wrapped around it and just roll over on my back to the other side, and everything stays in place. With my old C-shaped pillow, this movement wasn't nearly as fluid. I'd have to throw my duvet off and and struggle to flip the cumbersome shape and size over my body before turning over and readjusting myself.

Something to Note For Back Sleepers

Something to Note For Back Sleepers

Because I'm a natural back sleeper, I do like to wedge a thin pillow behind my back for extra support. If you prefer the feeling of having a lot of cushion support from behind, you may need to do this with the Bbhugme pillow as well.

I also prefer to lay my head on my bed pillow and use the Bbhugme pillow to support my body from the chest down. I struggled at first to find the best place to rest my head. I found that the Bbhugme pillow alone felt awkward for head support and that using it on top of my bed pillow just made my neck hurt.

Aside from being a comfortable sleeping companion, the Bbhugme pillow also offers great support when I want to sit up in bed or on the sofa — it's like having a cushy armchair that cocoons you wherever you sit.

When my body is aching for a back rub, I can tie the loose fabric ends together to create a donut, so that I can safely and comfortably lay on my belly, which feels amazing!

When baby comes, I can also tie the ends together to lend support while breastfeeding or use it to prop up my baby. Even my toddler refers to it as "the nest" and likes to curl up with me and my Bbhugme pillow in bed while we read stories during our nightly routine.

Overall Thoughts

Overall Thoughts

Is it expensive? Yes. That being said, it's more versatile than any other pregnancy pillow I've seen on the market, since it's useful during the pregnancy, postpartum, and breastfeeding stages and beyond. With its sleek design and manageable size, it also blends into the home environment better and even fits into a complementary travel tote (try using it during extralong car rides!). Unlike my last pregnancy pillow, which ultimately had to be tossed after becoming a torn, dirty mess by the end of my last pregnancy, I have a feeling I'll be hanging onto the Bbhugme pillow for years to come.
