ABC Turns Down Lane Bryant Commercial and Accepts Victoria's Secret 2010-04-22 10:11:52

ABC Says No to Plus Lingerie Models, Yes to Skinny Ones

It seems everywhere you turn these days there's some controversy over plus-size models. Yesterday Garance Doré made some comments that set people off, and now ABC is getting flak for refusing to air plus-size Lane Bryant lingerie ads on its network. Apparently the network said no to airing Lane Bryant lingerie ads during Dancing With the Stars because they were too racy. However, it ran Victoria's Secret lingerie commercials during American Idol. When ABC asked Lane Bryant models to show less skin, the brand turned down the request, stating that its ads are no more risque than Victoria's Secret ones. Talk about drama! What do you make of all of this?

Check out the commercial ABC did not want you to see.

I love that commercial. ... If I saw it on TV, it would make me smile. I don't see why they would run the VS add and not the LB one. ... I know American Idol is on Fox and Dancing with the Stars is on ABC, but ABC shows VS commercials, too. ... I just don't see how they can NOT run the commercial. I'm plus-sized, but healthy. It's not like they're showing rolls or anything. They're showing a perfectly smooth, well proportioned plus-sized ("normal") model. Nothing wrong with that. It's not distasteful in any way. They show MORE skin in Victoria's Secret ads. Ugh it makes me so mad that they DON'T air ads like this. ...

I love plus size people, and I really love that advert. I don't understand them.

this is a lot more tasteful and sophistacated than a VS commercial it would empower a lot more women than offend them. i think people need a taste of something different. people need to know that its ok to not be stick skinny. especially since its all we ever see...

I've always thought Victoria's Secret ads are laughable. They make cheaply made, overpriced underwear look overtly tacky. Oh... and definite bias.

i'd say that's a pretty harmless commercial, much less racy than a typical VS commercial.

I'm kind of on the fence. I don't like models of any extremes (SUPER skinny or SUPER plus size) because I believe it helps promote an unhealthy lifestyle. But it is absolutely RIDICULOUS that they refused to run this ad. Hell, if you changed the model, added some different music, and changed the brand, it could probably pass as a Victoria's Secret ad. Oy ve, this is just silly.

I read about this: the issue was that ABC wouldn't run it at all. Fox didn't want to run it at first unless they changed it so basically only the model's face was showing. Lane Bryant pointed out that Fox ran VS commercials that were just as risque...though they say they treat them both the same. I think that's completely untrue and there is a SERIOUS bias going on here. If Lane Bryant wants to pay to air their commercials on Fox there is NO REASON why their lingerie commercial should be banned while allowing VS's commercials to run. I'm not plus sized but I prefer the Lane Bryant commercial. COME ON that commercial was a hell of a lot more tasteful than a lot of the Victoria's Secret commercials that air. It makes me so angry to hear about this.

Aren't these two different networks? American Idol is on Fox - Dancing with the Stars is on ABC. Unless you say they ran a VS ad on ABC then that's different.

It is a double standard and just plain prejudice.

Regardless what people think, this is a huge double-standard and pretty discriminatory. I'm surprised they would ban this for the reasons they stated if they will run VS commercials...

That photo on the right of the plus sized model is just comical. Why are her arms in such an awkard position? And why is she wearing such tacky lingerie? I thought the commercial was fine, and I really don't understand why the networks had a problem with airing it.

I definitely agree with Miss Infamous, way too skinny and way too chubby are not healthy

When I walk down the street I dont see women who look like Victoria's secret models lol I get they are trying to sell a fantasy but I think a mixture of Plus size models would be great
