The 1 Swimsuit Trend That Makes Me Feel SO Damn Confident in My Skin

Jul 28 2019 - 11:25am

Not a fan of practically non-existent bikinis? Me neither. While I'm all for trying out new trends like the whole tie-dye hype [1] and ugly sandal trend [2], I usually stick to the same couple silhouettes when it comes to swimsuits. If it ain't broke, why fix it, right? As I've gotten older, I've started to fall in love with how classic one-piece swimsuits are. When belted one-piece swimsuits started becoming a major trend this year, I didn't have to go way out of my comfort zone to give it a try.

In fact, the belted one-piece trend could not have come at a better time. You see, I went through a surgery a couple of months ago where I ended up with four scars across my stomach. While I'm not ashamed in any way, I was told by the doctor to keep the scars away from direct sunlight for a while to let them heal, so wearing a bikini was sadly out of the question. With these orders in mind, I pushed my favorite two-pieces [3] toward the back of my closet and went on the hunt for belted one-pieces.

There are some amazing fashion brands, some of which I didn't even realize had swimsuit collections [4], putting their own twist on the trend, and I knew I had to try them. From Solid and Striped's retro belted one-piece that comes in a sweet gingham-print, to a bandana-print swimsuit from WeWoreWhat's collab with Onia which has a Western-inspired belt, there are plenty to choose from.

One thing I immediately loved about wearing these belted styles [5] is that it felt like I was already accessorizing my swimsuits without having to wear any jewelry. The belt was statement enough! If you like how one-pieces keep everything nice and tight, you'll love this style because the belt also cinches in your waist. Looking to make your legs look longer? Opt for a high-leg one, because it does that too! I started to wear the style everywhere, from vacationing in Miami to catching some rays on a roof in New York. Needless to say, I was hooked. While I'm not saying I'm going to toss aside bikinis forever, the belted swimsuit style is definitely one that every body type [6] can enjoy wearing this Summer.

Keep reading to see the four styles I tried and shop the exact styles, as well as other picks, if you want to add this trend to your swimsuit rotation.

The Cow-Print Swimuit

I wore this WeWoreWhat x Onia one-piece that featured a Western buckle belt across the waist while catching some rays. This swimsuit came in a super high-leg silhouette and featured a fun cow-print, which is also a distinct trend for this season. Fun fact: Kylie Jenner [8] AND Khloé Kardashian [9] both rocked this exact swimsuit while on vacation, and I can see why! It's definitely an easy way to stand out from the crowd. Just keep in mind, it's a bit on the cheekier side.

The Summer Classic: Gingham

I can't get enough of Solid and Striped. The brand has a way of making sleek designs that work for every age group. I slipped into its one-piece that came in a bold red gingham-print. The brand's yellow gingham bikini [11] is actually one of my all-time faves! Much like the bikini I own, this one-piece has the same stretchy feel that was super breathable. The adjustable belt gave the swimsuit more of a '50s vibe which I just adored.

The Western-Inspired Suit

I was instantly drawn to this WeWoreWhat x Onia bandana-print swimsuit. I wore it to the beach in Florida and actually had three girls come up to me on separate occasions asking where it was from because they loved the belt accent. The suit was super comfortable to wear and the belt didn't dig into my stomach at all. Sophie Turner actually wore the same swimsuit [13] in black while vacationing in Miami at the same time!

The Striped Convertible

If you're looking to get the most out of your swimsuit, look no further than Londre The Multiway [15]. As the name suggests, you can tie the long straps in six flattering ways. I belted the low-neck swimsuit around my waist a couple of times and tied it in the front. Much to my disbelief, it didn't unravel while I took laps in the pool, which is a huge bonus for me!
