Although Jennifer Lawrence wasn't in attendance, it's no surprise that she might be Christian Dior's biggest fan. After months of nonstop red carpets featuring Dior dress after Dior dress, we've got a good feeling she'll be wearing one come Sunday at the Academy Awards. So we watched Raf Simons's Fall 2014 lineup in search of a gown to trump all gowns.
Instead, we found a far less formal offering. And one that felt decidedly non-Fall. A smattering of primary colors, minimal layering, and dress-on-dresses in bold color combinations — pink over green, yellow over blush, blue over red — gave this well-tailored collection a jolt of brightness and lightness. Even embellishments were kept at bay, save for some jewel work across the slits of tulip dresses and some corsetry stitching. And aside from a series of monochromatic double-breasted suits and a set of frothy cocktail dresses that could potentially be lengthened upon request, there purposefully seemed not to be a red carpet gown in the lot. The final three looks of the collection — silvery gray embellished floor-length dresses casually slung over long tank tops — took such an approach to evening wear that felt so casual and youthful, we just might see J Law working the room in one.
