Burberry's Christopher Bailey gave a brief history of his career when he delivered the keynote address at Tuesday's CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards, which he said started with Donna Karan taking off her clothes.
Bailey was a student at London's Royal College of Art when he first met Karan, who eventually hired him as a womenswear designer. But their first encounter would likely send any human resources staffer into fits of rage.
"She completely seduced me with the way she sees the world," Bailey said. "She stripped naked within about three minutes of meeting, and tried on all my things. That was one of my first big wake up calls to how nutty — and how brilliant — this industry is. . . So I went to work for Donna after I left and it got even more ridiculous. We would be working very, very late. At 3 am there would be a masseur coming around to give you a massage. That's weird. Then at 4 am we'd all sit in a little circle and we'd chat over the fabrics. That was weird to me too. And then at five o'clock Demi Moore would come in for a fitting."
