Definitely, it's where designers can go crazy and express themselves unlike the streetwears that they make; that are limited by the market's wants.

Over the past few years couture has taken a turn for the worst. There are several reasons for the demise of fashions highest level; 1. Not everyone wants to dress like Beyonce. After seeing all of Hollywoods finest dressed up in Valentino and Chanel couture at award shows why would a NY socialite want to be photographed in the same outfit as Hilary Swank and pay for it too!? 2. Couture is a world all to its own. Even if you had the money to spend on couture clothing (which is way too much!- Chanel couture suits start at 60,000 Euros) there are all kinds acquaintances that one would have to have and meetings to occur between to buyer and the couturier. Not only does there have to be a formal intro to the couture house but that is followed by 5-7 trips to Paris for fittings and some people dont have that much time to spare, even Socialites (and I dont mean Paris Hilton 'socialite', she is no where near the true meaning of the word, she is really just trash, but that is another story) 3. Couture is so hard to wear that if the occasion did arise for a well-to-do, couture might not be on the top of the list. Every couture fashion show has the thinnest girls walking down the runway (trust me, I was just at Paris couture week and those girls look sickly). Why would a woman who is at her proper weight want to wear something that the designer believes looks better on a 80 lbs. 14 year old? These are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to couture. I wish it was more accessible but even to those who can access it, the appeal has dwindled. I blame hollywood and Beyonce but maybe it is the desginers who we should blame or even the socialites who no longer find the need to wear couture.

HC is creative but shows that they are expressive to an individual since most of their stuff will be see on hundreds if not thousands of people. it shows the whole spectrum of their designs and tailoring- their artistic style.

That the picture I have on my profile! Did you snag this? Jk. Of course couture is important. It's about artistic talent like taylorbath said. Plus, it's so darn pretty!

I never 'got' couture until Project Runway's Paris/Couture challenge. That really made me appreciate the artistic talent and craftsmanship that goes into couture.

I think that couture is an important part of the fashion world because it allows the designers to create works of art. This in turn becomes inspiration for regular runway clothing and eventually what most people can afford. Its kinda a trickle down effect. Like Miranda points out to Andi in the Devil Wears Prada scene about which belt goes with which outfit.

yes!!! that's true art and who doesn't LOVE marveling at what designers come up with?

i just hope that it always remains. the clients for couture is so small, like less than 200 people around the world, that designers may start to do less of it, since it costs so much to create. but it's such a essential part of the fashion industry, keep the REAL couture alive!

I think couture is extremely important. It is a way to express yourself without having to answer to a consumer or mass audience. It is a form of art. Go on any art museum's website and you will see at least one fashion designer's name in there.

OK, I was going to vote "definitely" but I wasn't sure. I wasn't sure what the difference was between couture and other runway fashion. ART - yes I see now, like Vivian Westwood.

Couture is a form of art. Some artists make sculptures, some design buildings, and some create amazing creations with fabric. I think that couture designers are even more creative than most artists because they have to have 2 couture collections a year. They also have RTW and most of them do Resort. It's amazing the amount of creativity that comes out of their minds. Not only that but the people who sew these creations are truly artists too. Did you see the balloon sleeves on the pink Valentino gown yesterday? If that's not art, I don't know what is. Haha, slightly passionate about this! :P

It's about art and creativity and fun but is it as important as it was years ago? No I don't think so because no one wears it and it costs bundles of time and money to produce, which is why so many designers do ready to wear collections and collections for budget stores like Target that's where they earn their revenue. I don't want to see couture go because of the drama of it all but it's not that important to most people.

of course couture is important the clothes are supposed to be works of art not practical every wear it gives designers a chance to really be creative with no restrictions as to weather or not it has to be wearable or in any way cost effective
Scarlet39 Scarlet39 9 years
Absolutely. Although most of us (myself included) will likely never be lucky enough to own couture, the ideas and concepts that funnel down effect our wardrobes enormously.
