Fab Flash: The Next Generation in Fur

Fur is one, if not the most controversial subject in fashion. And I've got news for you: It's not going anywhere.

According to WWD, not only is the newest crop of designers supporting fur, but many are also trying to get licensing deals so they can have field days with it. The list of designers jumping on the fur train include Peter Som (Fall fur collar pictured), Chris Benz, Doo-Ri Chung, and Zac Posen. Despite a dip in fur sales last year, customers are currently more interested in smaller fur pieces like stoles and hats. But like many traditional fashion materials, fur needs a new perspective, an upgrade. As Peter Som puts it: "I love treating fur like I would any fabric — mixing textures, colors, and giving it an airy touch. It's all about creating romance and elegance. Fur ups the ante a thousand percent."

Nice job, Royal... except that I was talking about past articles and her overall opinion of fur.

Foxie... you are beyond rude. It's obvious no one here likes fur. Fab is just posting the news in fashion and not everyone is going to like it all. I'm glad she posts all news and not just some of it. If she only posted some... I wouldn't come to this site. I want all the news. Thank you fab for posting all fashion news. It's why I'm part of this site. Don't change anything.

I would never, EVER wear fur or condone the wearing of it. If its a vintage piece then fine, but let's not kid ourselves and give in to more needless killing of animals just for the illusion that it makes you look good - unless you're 6' tall and a US size 2 or below, its only going to add on the pounds so why bother?

I hate fur and would never consider wearing it.

Woah. Abortions and killing animals for fur is SO not the same thing. You don't rip the skin off of a fetus to have an abortion -- and hey, maybe when people start adopting orphaned crack babies we can worry about unborn fetuses that never had to know hunger or abuse.

I personally don't like fur, not because I'm against it, but just because I don't think it looks good on me. However, I get so sick and tired of people complaining about "how dare people kill animals for fashion" when they're totally fine with abortion! Stop killing babies and then we can worry about animals...

No, not THIS story. However, we've all seen the 'fab' outfits you post and drool over. I seriously just want to know what's up with it. You honestly don't think there's something completely wrong about wearing a skinned animal's pelt around your body? You don't think there's anything wrong with the fact that so many fur garments are actually made of cats and dogs, courtesy of China? You REALLY think these kinds of outfits are something to lust after? See, since I don't personally know ANYONE who thinks wearing fur is acceptable, let alone fashionable, I really want to hear your reasoning.

Hey all, including you, foxie, I am just reporting the news here. Whatever my views, I'm allowed, whatever your views, you're allowed. I don't think my story is pro or against, so please play nice. :)

No fur for me. Never have, never will. That's just so wrong in my book.

Wow. I'm pleasantly surprised that fur doesn't seem very popular--at least among the people who bothered to comment on this segment. I, too, am disgusted by the use of fur in fashion. It's just so excessive, unnecesary, and cruel. I guess I can sympathize with wearing a hand-me-down, but not with purchasing something brand new. I just wish more designers and consumers thought this way.

Whoo, ouch foxie! Not that I don't agree, but that's a stinger. I could never get into fur, especially since, like mentioned before, there's so many good faux-options. But I also don't have a problem with someone purchasing one at a vintage store or wearing one that's been passed down through the family. Eh. No fur for me, but to each their own.

Get with the program. Animals are skinned alive to make the tackiest of tacky garments. It's not cute. It's CRUEL. Fabsugar, it's no secret that you are a big lover of the fur garment. What's up? Did you trade your conscience for a pair of shoes or something?

I think fur is gross but, for some reason, I do love leather... maybe it's because most of the animal actually gets used and there is some regulation about how they are killed. Plus, there are super convincing fake furs out there, so using real fur seems gratuitous -- really lazy on the part of a designer.

How exactly does a dead animal pelt give the garment an airy touch?

I bet Peter Som would feel differently if he had to kill the animal himself. I just can't see a fur coat without thinking that the person wearing it isn't very compassionate. So to me, fur is super-passe.

I don't like real fur at all!! ... but I love really high quality luxurious FAUX fur. Why kill an animal when you can have Faux fur that doesn't hurt anything?

I completely agree with fsofield. No truly "fab" person would support the needless torture of innocent beings. I would like to see how "romantic" and "elegant" these stoles would appear to women if they were made from a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Supporting the cruelty behind the fur industry is inhumane and ugly.

I don't agree with wearing fur. I never have and never will. But I've noticed an interesting trend of hipster girls my age enjoying vintage fur. it's all pretty ridiculous considering I live in L.A. and when does anyone ever need to wear fur here!

Wow. This surprises me. I have a fur coat that was my grandmother's, and one of my friends gets mad when I wear that one, even in the frozen tundra of Minnesota at Christmas time. Brrrr!

God there's nothing more romantic, then wearing a tortured dead animal pelt around your body. For shame Fabsugar for promoting something so disgustingly archaic.
