"The people who really survive and rise to the top kind of have figured out early on that you need to be flexible. You need to be able to step back and observe a lot and kind of put your own personality on the back burner for a while. Some of the best advice I ever got was that to be a good number one, you have to be a good number two. You have to really shadow a person or shadow a team and — you know what, it sounds so fundamental — but then you put that advice in context with your industry where everything is so heightened and it can get so dramatic, it can get so intense."
