We can always count on Frances McDormand to march to the beat of her own drum all award season long. Case in point: she wore the fashion world's most polarizing shoe, Birkenstocks [1], to the Oscars this year. In a sea of sky-high stilettos [2], the 61-year-old actress stood out in her bright yellow slides as she walked the red carpet and took the stage to present Olivia Colman with the best actress award [3].
Frances designed her custom suede Birkenstocks with Valentino Creative Director Pierpaolo Piccioli and paired them with a ruffled magenta gown from the Italian fashion house's Spring 2019 Couture collection. Though I've personally always been staunchly anti-Birks, I must admit that I admire her unconventional footwear choice.
