With a front row that included Jessica Chastain, Frank Ocean, Amanda Seyfried, Kanye West, and Kim Kardashian, Riccardo Tisci's Fall 2013 show for Givenchy was among the buzziest of Paris Fashion Week outings yet. Thanks to a live performance by Antony Hegarty of Antony and the Johnsons and the imposing circular runway at Halle Freyssinet, it was also one of the more theatrical.
"The strength of gypsies meets the romanticism of a Victorian feeling," the notes explained of the floral prints, tiers of lace, and layers of velvet that made their way down the runway. In the form of trumpet skirts, boot-cut pants, and superlong dresses, they certainly offered a gypsy-Victorian vibe, but there was much more to this collection than just that. Thigh-skimming boyfriend sweaters (some of which were adorned with shimmering sequins or punked-up Bambi prints), flannel-and-floral button-downs, and tough-girl moto jackets were paired with each free-flowing bottom, while origami-folded corset belts nipped in at the middle and rosebud-covered caps in vibrant colors topped each models' head. It was a mashup that felt irreverent, clever, and even a little bit grunge.
