How Alexander Wang Decided to Take on Balenciaga

Fear and a Psychic Convinced Alexander Wang to Take the Balenciaga Job

The work Alexander Wang has done in his first six months at the helm of Balenciaga has been so well-received it's hard to believe he didn't want the job in the first place. But in an interview with Vogue's Mark Holgate, Wang said it took some near-divine intervention to get him to sign on the dotted line.

"My first reaction to [Kering CEO Francois Henri-Pinault] was no," Wang said. "I told him that I was so preoccupied with what I am doing with my own brand in New York, and . . . I'll be the most hated man in fashion!"

For guidance, Wang sought the help of a psychic who told him taking the job — and replacing the house's beloved former creative director Nicolas Ghesquière — was his fate. But eventually, Wang came to the conclusion that he wanted the job on his own.

"I felt that fear was driving my decision-making," he said. "So I wrote down a list of pros and cons and asked myself, 'What am I afraid of? The perception of failure? The perception of what people might think?' I knew that what I wanted completely outweighed all of that."
