We Were Scared to Try This Shorts Trend, Now We're Obsessed

Styling Bermuda shorts is as confusing as trying to explain the physics behind the Bermuda Triangle. While most Summers I often find myself reaching for my denim cutoffs, something felt a little off this season. I wanted a pair of shorts that were not only appropriate enough to wear to the office, but ones that made me feel like Carrie Bradshaw on her way to a fun date night. Maybe this is what growing up feels like!

Even as a kid, I steered clear of Bermuda shorts because they didn't seem that appealing to me. This year, seeing luxury designers like Prada and denim brands like AGOLDE giving the style a modern spin had both me and my colleague Sarah itching to see if we could pull it off. What we learned is that it all comes down to the style you choose and, of course, a dash of confidence, which never hurts.

Since I hate anything form-fitting, I set my eyes on the baggier, Cali surf girl style, while Sarah dared to wear more form-fitting options, including a pair of satin Prada shorts from Moda Operandi that are what fashion dreams are made of. Keep reading to see how we styled these Bermuda shorts. Then, check out the pieces if you dare to give the trend a try this Summer too.

Light-Wash Bermuda Shorts

Ditch your go-to cutoffs and give light-wash Bermuda shorts a try. They're just as versatile as your favorite pair of denim shorts and you can get away with wearing them to work because of the length (as long as jeans are HR approved).

"Since my AGOLDE shorts had a baggy silhouette that screamed '90s, I completed the look with another major retro trend of the Summer: tie-dye. I tucked my Re/Done tie-dye shirt into my Bermuda shorts and finished the look with lemon-hued sandals by ATP Atelier. TBH, it really didn't feel any different from wearing a pair of cutoffs or mom jeans and I felt very comfortable walking around the city in these. I finished my outfit off with my favorite Susan Alexandra beaded bag and Warby Parker sunglasses."

"I went for beachy, '90s vibes by completing my distressed GRLFRND Bermudas with a ribbed tank, espadrilles, and a woven tote. Truth be told, I've been wearing these to-the-knee shorts even more often than I have my go-to cutoffs this Summer. I've always been pretty nervous about this length in denim (would it shorten the look of my already-pretty-'effin-short legs?). But I like the modest touch a few extra inches brings to even a casual outfit like this one, so I just wear these with platform sandals for extra height. Plus, the high waist seems to miraculously elongate my torso, which is fine by me! BTW, these jeans are so incredibly soft, I could fall asleep in them."

"I feel like the dark-wash Bermudas are actually a fun outfit to wear for a date night. Rather than slipping into a pair of black jeans or an LBD, I just opted for these Hudson shorts. These pants were a bit on the boxier side, but I liked that they hit below my knee and the fact that they were distressed. I styled my shorts with a leopard print tie-front top by Equipment and accessorized with my black By Far kitten heels and an LPA basket bag."

"I went for a total surfer look in these satin Prada shorts. I actually pulled out my Solid & Striped belted swimsuit for this look and wove the belt through the loops of my Bermudas. The only shoes that could naturally complete this outfit were my signature Tevas — literally, they're embroidered with my initials! — and taking on the "ugly sandal trend" all at once only added to my confidence. I just kept repeating to myself, 'You're a babe in board shorts,' all day long."
