The Ultimate Winter Coat For Every Woman, According to J.Crew's Head Stylist

Dec 26 2016 - 12:30pm

J.Crew's bright holiday lookbook was photographed in Canada, so when we spoke to the brand's head stylist, Gayle Spannaus, we had some questions. Models posed sans tights and puffy coats, still showing off J.Crew's signature mix-and-match look [1], but with far fewer layers. This was purposeful, according to Gayle. J.Crew keeps in mind that Winter doesn't mean chilly temps all around the globe, and color has the power to affect mood — why not wear it in abundance year round?

Gayle also graced us with a few more style notes (including how to work those Winter boots seamlessly into your outfit!) and revealed the number one coat silhouette, in her professional opinion. Read on to get the full scoop and shop some of the pieces you'll need to play by J.Crew's rules this season.

The 1 Type of Coat Every Woman Needs For Winter

"The one type of coat every girl needs to get through the Winter is a classic navy or black peacoat. It's warm, it looks great on everybody, and it's ageless."

J. Crew Majesty Peacoat [5] ($298)

The Most Stylish Way to Wear Snow Boots

"Wear tonal tights or socks so they become a seamless part of your look, and less of a statement. (But check them at the door when you get inside!)"

Penelope Chilvers Incredible Boots [6] ($585)

Winter Clothes Shouldn't Be Dark

"Not everyone is always in snow land so we do try to consider that [at J.Crew]. And for us, Winter clothes don't have to be grays, navys, and blacks — J.Crew is all about color, especially to brighten the long cold Winter months when it's gray and dreary outside. So that palette really works everywhere."
